Tokyo I'm On My Way

It's funny to think about now, but when I first watched this episode the whole idea of them going to Tokyo from Nagano was completely lost on me. The plot hinges on it. And it's in the episode title no less! Admittedly it was a long time ago and there was no Wikipedia. I didn't have many guidebooks outside of Terebi-Magazine and my Japanese was rudimentary at best, but that fact went right over me.

Although now, I'm pretty sure almost all the Nagano stuff is actually shot around Tokyo. Go figure.

Seeing Red

Kuuga continues! And so do the spoilers, but if you haven't watched this yet... go do that, then come back here.

He's Back In Business

About 2 years ago, I decided that I would rewatch and review 2000's Kamen Rider Kuuga in its entirety, mainly to tie in with Decade and the whole Heisei TV Series Anniversary thing. Of course, this idea got sidetracked for about... well, 2 years. But now, 2 years later, here we are again.

I needed something to review to launch the big 2011 return of igadevil.com, so what better than the show which inadvertently doomed it in the first place? (I'll tell that story another time.) So here it is, 2 years in the making...

Exclusive Insanity

Yet more web-exclusive figures are on the way from the Tamashii Web Bandai Collector's Shop. Who's up this time:

S.H. FiguArts Sieg, from Kamen Rider Den-O. Yeah yeah yeah, I think we all knew this was coming. With Momotaros, Urataros and Deneb being regular releases, Sieg joins Kintaros and Ryuutaros (also up for preorder until 8/17) as webshop exclusives. More details here.

The figure ships in December 2009.

S.H. FiguArts Kamen Rider Kuuga Rising Ultimate Form (Black-eyed Version) from some movie that just came out. This one came out of nowhere so fast that at first I didn't even believe it was real! But it is indeed, though not up for preorder just yet. This is the black-eyed version, and if you know anything about how Ultimate Form works (or read my Spoiler review of the movie) you know what this guy means. A Red-eyed version will be on sale at Toei Hero Net, essentially making it another web exclusive. More details on the Black-eyed one here.

The figure ships in February 2010.

Lastly, S.I.C. Kamen Rider Kiva Emperor Form from... guess where. Normal old Kiva comes out at the end of this month, and his super-duper upgrade is also up for preorder now. I've got a few pictures of him from the Tokyo Toy Show back in July which I'll be putting up soon. More details here.

The figure ships in December 2009.

Of course, getting any of these if you live outside Japan will be tougher than it would be to get a general release. Fortunately, I'm told they do eventually turn up overseas in other parts of Asia (like Hong Kong), and middlemen services in Japan should be able to help you once they get released and start popping up on the auction sites. Because Tamashii Web allows you to preorder up to 24 figures, there's usually plenty of these guys to go around, it's all a matter of finding one for a decent price.

You can also find someone in Japan to preorder one for you. Which I caaaan do, but if you want a a real fast, friendly service that specializes in this stuff, I highly recommend Yokatta Shopping, who takes preorders for these webshop figures. They've helped me get some other hard-to-find items in the past and are consummate professionals.

New Decade Form, And...

As I struggle to finish the Den-O & Decade Review (with the first-ever photo-intensive plot summary!), check out these new images from cowspot:

The long-awaited, sometimes-glimpsed (if you saw the leaked toy catalog or filming photos) "complete" form for Decade. Which I'm sure is going to have people talking just as much as the normal Decade design did.

And perhaps even more controversial...

A new form for Kuuga? Like Ultimate Form, coming in a red and black-eyed variety? Not really sure what to say about that. It would seem to indicate that Kuuga will be playing a bigger role in the series soon... unless they just do this for one episode until he trips over a pile of unsold DX Diendrivers.

Stay Tuned!

Edit: My thanks to Ryulong on HJU for also posting picture from the upcoming All Riders vs. Daishocker movie. Check it out!

Yup. A new take on Doctor Shinigami, played by Ishibashi Renji (that's grandpa on the TV show) and a new spin on Ambassador Hell. The color scheme's pretty cool, and I love the fact that they went all the way and gave him the old-style helmet, which has always been slightly comical in a very badass way.

Now where's Zol & Black?

Old Heroes, Old Legends

Well I don't know about Toei, but as far as Bandai seems to be concerned, 2009 will be a celebration of Kamen Rider being back on TV in general, cuz they've got a lot of stuff planned covering all the Riders, from the original 1971 series up to the present.

In addition to the Legend Rider Series soft vinyl figures reported earlier, Bandai will be re-releasing the "budget" versions of the Henshin Belts from a couple years ago, starting with Rider 1's & Kuuga's.

Legend Rider Henshin Belt Series

Now called Legend Rider Henshin Belt Series, they're due out at the end of December for less than $30.

These were pretty neat toys the first time around, even if they're considerably more "toylike" than the DX versions (especially so in the Typhoon's case, where the only real DX version is the pricey 1/1-size version.) But as far as lights and sound go, these ain't half bad. Supposedly they're being slightly retooled for the re-release, so if you missed out the first time, these might be worth a pick-up. No word yet on if the DX version of Kuuga's (and his follow-ups) will ever be re-released, but you never know...

I hope they re-release the others from the original line of these, because they did V3's Double Typhoon, and I need one of those baaaaad. It'd also be cool if they did some new ones, even in the cheaper style with the big plastic lever on the top. I wouldn't mind that if it meant just getting a new Ridol or BLACK Henshin Belt, cuz I doubt the original versions of those will ever be released again.

Put it in Motion

Okay, the Kiva review thing's coming up soon. Until then:

Motion Revive Series Volume 6

Slated for a late December 2008 release, it's another volume of the wildly-successful Motion Revive Series Kamen Rider candy toy series, number 6 to be exact. Candy Toy lines come and go, so it's nice to see one actually sticking around for a while (the last two "motion" lines tanked after one set each.)

Especially nice, since these? Are pretty awesome. They've honestly been putting bigger lines to shame with the variety of characters and consistent quality. 5 sets down and I've loved 'em all. Up until the recent FiguArts versions, it was this series that gave us the best-yet versions of the Hopper bros., plus the secret figures (which are thankfully easy to get) are always pretty awesome. And they come with a bunch of accessories; weapons, multiple hands, stuff like that. In the last set alone, we got both original versions of IXA with basically all his weaponry between the two of them. Someone should send the memo up to the Sôchaku-Henshin people.

Now, the sixth volume will give us something old and something new. Kiva is represented by Rising IXA and Kiva Emperor Form, the latter of which will include "a sword" according to the pic there. In other words, the thing from the toy picture that's been floating around for a while now (and appears in shaded-out form in the kiddie mags this month.) Kamen Rider Kuuga gets in on the action with two Rising Forms, Mighty & Pegasus. And then there's... Blade! Hey, why not, since they just did Hibiki and have sort of been working backwards. It will be interesting to see how this Blade stacks up with the older version from his own one-set "Motion" series.

Given that these things tend to have 6 figures plus a secret one, there's still one more regular figure to be revealed. I'm predicting either Saga, Garren, another Kuuga form, or someone completely out of left field. As for the secret figure, it could be Blade Jack Form, a Shocker Rider (finally?), another Kuuga form, or again, someone completely out of left field. We'll see!
