Den-O Episode #13: "Is it Okay? I Can't Hear Your Answer"

***

An exhausted Ryôtarô lets Urataros take control of his body, but right when the blue dude tries to score another date, Momotaros takes control, looking for his own brand of action. Momotaros is knocked right out by Kintaros (after mistakenly blurting out the word "Cry", which always sets the big grizzly off) and when all three Imagin vie for control of his body, they are knocked back to the Den-Liner by a mysterious force. A park attendant named Toyama witnesses this whole scene.

As Hana berates the Imagin for the toll their possession takes on Ryôtarô, our hero undergoes some "Super Counseling" with Miura (still believing he's possessed by a demon.) Ozaki shows up and makes some weird faces, and Airi is her usual spaced-out self. Miura asks Ryôtarô to close his eyes and look deep inside his heart. When doing so, Ryôtarô's eyes change purple. (He opened them again, smarty.)

"I've found him."

Momotaros & the other Imagin realize something's up, and this begins to worry Hana. Elsewhere, at a park, Toyama is feeding the various animals that come by, but they are scared off by a group of street dancers practicing their moves. Toyama tries to get them to leave, but they tell him off. To add insult to injury, he recognizes one of them as a boy who used to come by and help feed the animals. As he washes off the food bowls, the ghostly image of Owl Imagin appears before him, demanding to know his wish...

Possessed by a new Imagin, Ryôtarô dances his way up to the other dancers and proceeds to beat the crap out of them all (if this episode has one defining moment, it's when he just up and punches out the lead dancer, completely out of the blue.) This new Ryôtarô is irreverent & immature, but immensely powerful, and he quickly turns his one-time victims into his own personal back-up dancers (And they dance to a really loopy remix of "Climax Jump".)

Hana arrives at the Milk Dipper to find the place trashed, Miura knocked silly, and Airi & Ozaki gone. Back at the park, Owl Imagin attacks any visitors, much to Toyama's dismay. But his wish was to make the park safe for animals, and the Imagin is fulfilling his wish in the usual twisted manner. Hana eventually arrives at the park, looking for Ryôtarô, only to get attacked by Owl Imagin. Momotaros, who appears in sandy form, is unable to help (although he still tries in a great little moment.)

Ryôtarô, still possessed, shows up with his dance group and surprises the good guys when he transforms into Den-O Gun Form. Seeking to fight Owl Imagin (over smashing a birdhouse, or maybe just because he's nutty), Gun Form engages the Imagin in a highly destructive battle that demolishes much of the surrounding area. The bad guy escapes, and the new Imagin refuses to leave Ryôtarô's body, even when attacked by the combined might of Momotaros, Urataros, & Kintaros. In fact, he is pretty dead-set on never leaving, until Ryôtarô finally regains control. Before that, there's a creepy little moment here where he grabs Hana's wrist, and it seems this version of Ryôtarô may be just a little bit nastier than usual.

Elsewhere, Airi & Ozaki are driving along, and Airi reflects on a mysterious past love, a telescope like the one in the Milk Dipper (probably *the* telescope), and a ticking pocketwatch, on the back of which are engraved the words "The past should give us hope".

What We Learned This Episode:
  • The glasses really do just come out of nowhere.
  • Urataros = You, Momotaros = Your parents who don't want you going out with that guy/girl.
  • Even when getting up off the floor, Kintaros has his arms crossed.
  • Miura probably once worked at the same place as Sayoko in Kamen Rider Blade.
  • Hana is okay with wearing the pants, if only in a proverbial sense.
  • A Spider Undead-controlled Mutsuki was a recent passenger on the Den-Liner, and he left something behind that Naomi picked up.
  • Japan has a whole lot more street dancers than I previously thought (no seriously, I must just be missing them all or something.)
  • Owls actually like it during the day (insert "ORLY" jokes here.)
  • "Is it okay if I punch you in the face?"
  • In the future where all the Imagin come from, they still have dancing!
  • "Is it okay if I beat the holy hell out of you guys?"
  • Gun Form... really can't aim very well.
  • But that guns packs a punch! Holy @#$%!
  • Not knowing what kind of Imagin is possesing Ryôtarô yet, Momotaros simply calls him "Ano Yarou!" ("That rascal!"...or "bastard!" if you prefer.)
  • Airi probably dated the Watch guy that's been showing up in every other episode or so thus far. And he's either going to be 1) Hana's brother from the Mirrorworld Future, 2) Ryôtarô's father (and Airi is really his mom), 3) The second Rider, 4) Ogawa Atsushi making his usual appearance, or 5) All of the above. Well, there's always 6) None of the above, but c'mon— can't a man dream?

  1. Ha! I love that trippy dance scene, felt a bit like watching those freaks in Sh15uya!

And I can't wait for the Doctor to actually kill that Human Dalek.

  3. Edit: Opps.

I got the impression they were hinting Airi *was* the trenchoat person. When she looks at the watch, they use the same ominous and completely loud ticks much like they do when they show trenchoat person. Also, in the "Next Time on Den-O" clip at the end, you can see trenchcoat person and it sure does look female.

In light of this, I think she lost her memory and is unaware that she's actually the MirrorJoker™, a construct of the Mirror World and the previously unknown 53rd card, the trump of all trumps. Also, she's secretly a Native, and has found her darkness through the Hoppers and bad fashion sense. Unbeknownst to everyone, she was at the Ryusei Reunion too, and she was the one that triggered the whole affair with flatulence caused by sour mustard. I hear she's also one of the dozen or so people sporting a TheBee tatoo. They were all the rage last year.

  4. That's a cracked-out theory after my own heart. (^_^)

Seriously though, I never thought of Airi being the watch guy/girl/it, but that would be a *brilliant* idea. I want to see how Ozaki & Miura would react to that!
