Biiiiiiiiiird-Men!

Happy Thanksgiving if you celebrate it. If not, Happy Whatever-you-did-today Day, and give yourself a pat on the back for saving another turkey from a delicious gravy-smothered demise.

Whatever the case, given that there's really no way I could possibly link an age-old American holiday with a Japanese TV show about guys in funny costumes running around hitting each other, I decided to do the next best thing:

List off all the oversized birds that have killed (and occasionally helped) innocent civillians over the years! Nearly every Rider series has had at least one, and sometimes have quite a few. There's also a few that are part avian, or have some kind of birdlike characteristic. We've even had at least 3 bird-based Riders, although this list sticks to the monsters and, because I say so, the Disc Animals. So let's get to it:

Kamen Rider

-Gebacondor (Condor)
-Pranodon (Pteranodon...hey, c'mon, it's close enough)
-Gilgaras (Crow)
-Fukurô-Otoko (Owl)
-Washi-Kamagiri (Eagle + Mantis)
-Canary-Cobra (Canary + Cobra)
-Nezu-Condor (Mouse + Condor)
-Gara-Ox (Crow + Ox)

*I also consider Egyptas to be a kinda-sorta bird-like monster, although he is primarily based on a mummy. But it was a mummy of a bird that walked liked a man, baby, so it's cool.

Kamen Rider V3

-Fire-Condor (Condor)

Kamen Rider X

-Icarus (Not specified, but I'd say Eagle)
-Genghis Khan-Condor (Condor)

Kamen Rider Amazon

-Fukurô-Jûjin (Owl)

Kamen Rider Stronger

-Kikaijin-Baketakan (Falcon)
-Division Commander Wild Eagle (Eagle)

New Kamen Rider

Amazingly, Skyrider never encounters any actual bird monsters, although he does fight nearly one of seemingly every other thing that can fly. Go figure.

Kamen Rider Super-1

-Satan Hawk (Hawk)
-Kaizer Grow (Crow. I dunno why they changed it either!)

Number Ten's Birth! Kamen Riders Back Together Again!!

-Takaroid (Falcon. One of the few new monsters that did it make it into the TV Special!)

Kamen Rider BLACK

-Oowashi Kaijin (Eagle)

Kamen Rider BLACK RX

-Gimeragomera (Debatable, but he was at least part bird)

Kamen Rider Kuuga

-Go Burô Gu (Owl)
-La Dorudo Gu (Condor)
-Me Gaberi Gu (Pelican)*

*Didn't actually appear in the series, but he officially exists as one of the "off-screen" Grongi.

Kamen Rider AgitΩ

-Corvus Croccio (Crow)
-Corvus Luscus (Crow)
-Corvus Intonsus (Crow)
-Corvus Calvas (Crow)
-Corvus Canosus (Crow...starting to see a pattern here?)
-Volucris Ulucus (Owl)
-Volucris Falco (Falcon)
-El of Wind (Not specified, but he is a bird of some sort)

Kamen Rider Ryuki

-Garudothunder (Phoenix)
-Garudostorm (Phoenix)
-Garudomirage (Phoenix)
-Goltphoenix (Golden Phoenix, and yes, it really is "Golt".)
-Blanwing (Swan)

Kamen Rider Faiz

-Crane Orphenoch (Crane)
-Owl Orphenoch (Owl)
-Pigeon Orphenoch (Pigeon)
-Pelican Orphenoch (Pelican. Seriously, who would have guessed pelicans were so evil?)

Kamen Rider Blade

Peacock Undead (Peacock)
Eagle Undead (Eagle)
Pecker Undead (Woodpecker)
Hawk Undead (Hawk)*

*Never seen on the show other than in card form. It's assumed that Kamen Rider Chalice had already sealed him the hell up! prior to the beginning of the series.

Kamen Rider Hibiki

-Akane-Taka (Disc Animal patterned after Falcon)
-Asagi-Washi (Disc Animal patterned after Eagle)
-Keshizumi-Garasu (Disc Animal patterned after Crow)
-Ittanmomen (Stingray + Large Bird)
-Ubume (Fish + Bird)
-Tengu (Tengu is a mythical Japanese creature, with various styles of depiction, some more birdlike than others.)

Kamen Rider Kabuto

None, but at this rate, that's probably how the show will end- a giant space bird comes down and eats up all the Worms or something.

So the moral of the story is, 35 years down the line, and we still don't have a Shichimenchô-Otoko, the Turkey-Man. Some day perhaps, some day...

Rider Chanpurū

I'm home for the holiday for the rest of this week, with lots of new stuff that I plan to talk about over the weekend. To tie you over for now, here's four things that, in spite of individual tastes or differences of opinion, most everybody should love:

The original 5 RidersMotorcycle scene long shots

Kabuki, Ibuki & Touki vs. the Pyrotechnics crew Things randomly exploding during a fight

RIDER HEAD KICK!Someone about to get kicked in the head

Even Kogure-san approves A bunch of girls dressed up like Hibiki

Be sure to tune in tomorrow for a very special Thanksgiving edition of IKRB that's 100% avian (that's the fancy-schmancy word for bird) friendly.

Surpise Attack!

Some cool breaking toy-related news, thanks the scanners over at cow-spot.net:

Hot on the heels of the Project BM! (Bandai x Medicom) Kamen Rider Hibiki, the upgrade form Hibiku Kurenai as well as regular, untransformed Hibiki are in the works! No word yet on whether one or both are exclusives, but I would bet on it since the Project BM! FIRSTy Kamen Rider 2 was only available if you bought Rider 1 and sent in the special mail-in slip (Medicom loves doing this kind of thing; more often than not figures have an accompanying slip needed to purchase special mail-aways.) I would guess that either one or both can only be obtained by buying the regular Kamen Rider Hibiki figure (most likely), or you need to get Kurenai in order to get you own scaled-down Hosokawa Shigeki. Good luck if you plan on trying to get these, check out the pic:

Hibiki Kurenai and...Hibiki-san!

And now for something that should be a little easier to obtain: the first prototypes of the upcomign Kamen Rider Ultimate Solid Part 3 are here! The first two sets of these bigger, more detailed Gashapon figures were pretty sweet, and #3 looks like it'll continue that trend.

Ultimate Solid 3: Currently in ProductionRiderman and Stronger are clearly visible, the other three are only shown from the back, but they're pretty clearly Kuuga and the FIRSTy Double Riders. Can't wait for this one!

Merchandise Update #2

The latest releases, as well as upcoming stuff:

-Dark Kabuto stuff is here! The Bandai RHK figure and the DX Henshin Belt are out, if you're thinking of getting those. The big Perfect Zecter sword thingy set is also out there.

-Coming in the latter half of December, the fifth and final set of Sôchaku-Henshin EX Mirror Monsters gives us exactly what we're expecting: two R&M repaints (Venosnaker and Dragblacker) and the all-new Blanwing. Check out the pic:

Venosnaker, Dragblacker and Blanwing

I never did get the R&M Ryuga, so that's really two new figures, plus Venosnaker looks to have improved deco over the old version, who, like R&M Ouja, was a rather bright purple.

-Coming in March 2007, it's the Kamen Rider Mask Collection 3. If you haven't been following this series, it's basically boxed scaled-down versions of various Kamen Rider masks. The first two sets were pretty cool, and the third one looks to continue that trend. The line-up this time:

Kamen Rider 1 (Old)
Kamen Rider 2 (Old)
Kamen Rider ZO
Kamen Rider Odin
Kamen Rider Femme
Kamen Rider Verde
Kamen Rider Faiz
Kamen Rider Delta
Kamen Rider Blade
Kamen Rider Leangle
Kamen Rider Hibiki (Armed)
Kamen Rider Kabuto (Masked Form)
Kamen Rider Kabuto (Hyper Form)
Kamen Rider Gatack (Rider Form)
+ Secret Chase Mask

Randomly-inserted light-up variants (usually one per case) also exist, basically there's a light in the stand/base so when you push down on the mask, the eyes light up.

That's it for now. I'm heading home tomorrow evening, so this weekend I hope to actually have some new stuff in my hands to talk about!

Kamen Rider Kabuto Episode #41

Here we go, the first real weekly review of Kamen Rider Kabuto I've done in a while. It's not quite as cool as getting to talk about it before anyone else has seen it (insert evil laugh) but on the plus side, there's pictures! And maybe a few things will be explained for the people who bravely try watching the unsubtitled episodes and still have no clue what's going on. Don't feel bad, I was there once.

And remember, these recaps will be revealing a lot of the show's surprises, so SPOILER WARNING! So let's get on with it...

After the usual recap/repeating some scene from last week, we join the Zectroopers preparing to test out the newly-completed Anti Mimic Bomb, capable of revealing Worms disguised as humans.

Hey, we're actually cool again!

Needless to say, it's a success. Score one for the Zectroopers!

Total Chaos!

Kagami's dad, Mishima and a whole bunch of ZECT suits discuss the AMB's potential to turn the tide in the ongoing war against the Worms. Meanwhile, Tendô's off climbing a mountain and doing saying usual Tendô stuff.

After the opening credits, Kagami, Tadokoro and Misaki are posing as truck drivers to evacuate a group of people from an area slated for AMB-related maneuvers. Their truck gets attached by Worms, which of course leads to much mayhem.

Worms on a Truck

Following an unscheduled crash, the gang must fight their way out through a horde of Worms, armed with just those dinky ZECT guns (which amazingly, seem to do a lot of damage) before Kagami eventually transforms into Gatack to start cleaning house.

That's another one you guys owe me. The Worms manage to break into the back of the truck, only to be attacked by a mass of Natives (distinguised from the regular Worms by their large horns and slightly different backs.) Kagami and Misaki are soon freaking out, while Tadokoro is strangely calm. Upon seeing Gatack, the Natives refer to him as "The Top's Son", further confusing our hero. Suddenly, the Natives are destroyed, and a new bunch of players enter the game:

At least they've got good posture this time... Nogi, the latest entry to the Dai Kanbu files, and a posse of women in black, who have dropped by to raise a little havoc. Nogi, able to move ridiculously fast, not only destroyed the Natives, but also defeats Gatack with little effort (briefly revealing his true form, the Cassisworm) before taking off. Misaki has been injured, and Kagami, perplexed by the recent events, eyes Tadokoro suspiciously.

Kagami takes Misaki to the Bistro, where Renge finally proves for the first time in a while and treats her, while Tsurugi, who's being treated to Renge's off-beat cooking, frets a lot before Kagami tells him to calm down. He soonafter realizes that Kagami and Misaki are not, as he previously though, a couple, which as you can imagine makes him a very happy man.

Kagami attempts to force his way in to meet his father, still playing up his dayjob as a police bigwig, but gets dogpiled by security and kicked in the head by Mishima. Elsewhere, Misaki awakens in bed, which is in the Bistro (..huh?) and Tsurugi's usual antics ensue. This time, he is introduced to the concepts of Tofu (which he puts sugar on, eliciting a great response from Tendô & crew) and Nattô (Fermented Soy Beans), which he finds utterly repulsive looking (which isn't actually so strange, as Nattô is generally one of those "you-love-it-or-you-hate-it" foods.) As usual, Misaki grows irritated with him, and tells him to give it up once again.

It sucks to be Tsurugi right now.

Kagami awakens to find himself face-to-face with none other than his wacky dad, who explains A TON about the main plot. 35 years ago, the Natives came and made an agreement with humans to protect them from the other Worms who would come later. Thus ZECT and the Masked Rider System Project began, guided by the hand of the Natives. Kagami was chosen long before his birth to be the user of Gatack, as was first hinted at back when he, Hiyori and Tendô were runnin' around in Area X. Realizing that he may exist for no other reason than to fight the Worms, Kagami leaves, visibly distraught.

Ummm...

He confers with Tendô, and they conclude that another meteriote that predates the one that touched down in Shibuya came 35 years ago, bringing the Natives. Seeing that the Natives are also Worms, Kagami feels morally conflicted, but Tendô remains firm in his resolve to defeat all Worms. We also learn that he obtained his belt from the Native who had been impersonating his father!

Tsurugi, lamenting the failure of all his efforts to win Misaki's affection, soon finds himself confronted by Yaguruma and Kageyama, and a battle erupts. Tadokoro arrives at the Bistro and announces his intent to assist in another AMB-related plan, which Kagami hesistantly joins in, following a few tense moments, after being swayed by Tadokoro's decree that he will risk his life to fight the Worms and save people. Meanwhile, Sasword gets trashed by the Double Hoppers, and winds up being sent flying (complete with cartoony sound effects.) However, the Hoppers do not wish to kill him, but rather recruit him to their cause- he will become their "little brother"!

Remember when all three of these guys were considered threatening? Tendô meets with Kagami's father briefly, speaking of Tendô's own father. As this happens, the plan to attack the Worms with another AMB is going completely to Hell! The Worms strike first, and Kagami transforms as the Zectroopers, who had briefly enjoyed a victory at the beginning of this episode, resume their prior role of Weekly Worm Fodder. To make matters worse, the AMB was launched before Tadokoro and Misaki could warn everybody of the incoming attack (due to communication blockage) and so, caught by the Worm-revealing gas, this happens:

Tadokoro-san?OH SNAP! Tadokoro is revealed to be a Native! Shocked by this revelation, Gatack completely loses his fighting spirit. Despite Tadokoro's best efforts to help him, he promptly gets hammered into the ground, first by the grunt Worms and then by Nogi, who doesn't even bother transforming into his Worm self- he just beats him senseless in his human form. With Gatack out of the running, Misaki and Tadokoro are at Nogi's mercy, at least until Tendô shows up in one of his coolest entrances in a while, briefly fighting Nogi before transforming into Kabuto. Nogi, who is fast proving himself to be a total badass, still doesn't transform. And that means one thing:

Awwwwwwww yeah.

Untransformed Villain Fight Scene!

Eventually though, he does reveal his Cassisworm alter-ego, and a vicious fight ensues. As Kagami is led away by Misaki, bitter at Tadokoro for keeping the truth from him, Kabuto goes Hyper and prepares to finish Cassisworm off.

Kabuto vs. CassiswormMaximum Ownage! But the latter reveals a nasty new trick: He can utterly freeze time, even the Hyper Clock Up, and hits Kabuto with a powerful blow that reverts him to normal and sends him flying back...

Wait...this isn't supposed to happen!

Overall, a pretty good episode with some great action and plot development, and next episode, featuring the return of Dark Kabuto, looks to be another good one. The only real downside this week was that, more than ever, it seems pretty much confirmed that the Hoppers have basically become comedy relief, especially now that they're hanging around with Tsurugi. Which wouldn't be so bad if they weren't creepy psychopaths up until a few episodes ago, but then perhaps maybe that's the intent- they've both been to Hell, and now they're on the road to redemption, which apparently involves eating nooodles and getting comically thrown through the air. Or something, I dunno. All I know is, I can't wait to see what this is going be all about:

Have at them, KAGAYAAAMA & YAAAGURUMA!
