Biiiiiiiiiird-Men!

Happy Thanksgiving if you celebrate it. If not, Happy Whatever-you-did-today Day, and give yourself a pat on the back for saving another turkey from a delicious gravy-smothered demise.

Whatever the case, given that there's really no way I could possibly link an age-old American holiday with a Japanese TV show about guys in funny costumes running around hitting each other, I decided to do the next best thing:

List off all the oversized birds that have killed (and occasionally helped) innocent civillians over the years! Nearly every Rider series has had at least one, and sometimes have quite a few. There's also a few that are part avian, or have some kind of birdlike characteristic. We've even had at least 3 bird-based Riders, although this list sticks to the monsters and, because I say so, the Disc Animals. So let's get to it:

Kamen Rider

-Gebacondor (Condor)
-Pranodon (Pteranodon...hey, c'mon, it's close enough)
-Gilgaras (Crow)
-Fukurô-Otoko (Owl)
-Washi-Kamagiri (Eagle + Mantis)
-Canary-Cobra (Canary + Cobra)
-Nezu-Condor (Mouse + Condor)
-Gara-Ox (Crow + Ox)

*I also consider Egyptas to be a kinda-sorta bird-like monster, although he is primarily based on a mummy. But it was a mummy of a bird that walked liked a man, baby, so it's cool.

Kamen Rider V3

-Fire-Condor (Condor)

Kamen Rider X

-Icarus (Not specified, but I'd say Eagle)
-Genghis Khan-Condor (Condor)

Kamen Rider Amazon

-Fukurô-Jûjin (Owl)

Kamen Rider Stronger

-Kikaijin-Baketakan (Falcon)
-Division Commander Wild Eagle (Eagle)

New Kamen Rider

Amazingly, Skyrider never encounters any actual bird monsters, although he does fight nearly one of seemingly every other thing that can fly. Go figure.

Kamen Rider Super-1

-Satan Hawk (Hawk)
-Kaizer Grow (Crow. I dunno why they changed it either!)

Number Ten's Birth! Kamen Riders Back Together Again!!

-Takaroid (Falcon. One of the few new monsters that did it make it into the TV Special!)

Kamen Rider BLACK

-Oowashi Kaijin (Eagle)

Kamen Rider BLACK RX

-Gimeragomera (Debatable, but he was at least part bird)

Kamen Rider Kuuga

-Go Burô Gu (Owl)
-La Dorudo Gu (Condor)
-Me Gaberi Gu (Pelican)*

*Didn't actually appear in the series, but he officially exists as one of the "off-screen" Grongi.

Kamen Rider AgitΩ

-Corvus Croccio (Crow)
-Corvus Luscus (Crow)
-Corvus Intonsus (Crow)
-Corvus Calvas (Crow)
-Corvus Canosus (Crow...starting to see a pattern here?)
-Volucris Ulucus (Owl)
-Volucris Falco (Falcon)
-El of Wind (Not specified, but he is a bird of some sort)

Kamen Rider Ryuki

-Garudothunder (Phoenix)
-Garudostorm (Phoenix)
-Garudomirage (Phoenix)
-Goltphoenix (Golden Phoenix, and yes, it really is "Golt".)
-Blanwing (Swan)

Kamen Rider Faiz

-Crane Orphenoch (Crane)
-Owl Orphenoch (Owl)
-Pigeon Orphenoch (Pigeon)
-Pelican Orphenoch (Pelican. Seriously, who would have guessed pelicans were so evil?)

Kamen Rider Blade

Peacock Undead (Peacock)
Eagle Undead (Eagle)
Pecker Undead (Woodpecker)
Hawk Undead (Hawk)*

*Never seen on the show other than in card form. It's assumed that Kamen Rider Chalice had already sealed him the hell up! prior to the beginning of the series.

Kamen Rider Hibiki

-Akane-Taka (Disc Animal patterned after Falcon)
-Asagi-Washi (Disc Animal patterned after Eagle)
-Keshizumi-Garasu (Disc Animal patterned after Crow)
-Ittanmomen (Stingray + Large Bird)
-Ubume (Fish + Bird)
-Tengu (Tengu is a mythical Japanese creature, with various styles of depiction, some more birdlike than others.)

Kamen Rider Kabuto

None, but at this rate, that's probably how the show will end- a giant space bird comes down and eats up all the Worms or something.

So the moral of the story is, 35 years down the line, and we still don't have a Shichimenchô-Otoko, the Turkey-Man. Some day perhaps, some day...

  1. Quite a list! I must say, turkeys are not too well known in Japan. I've never come across turkey in any media or on a menu. I have heard from mom that some nice restaurants serve it, however.

It's quite amazing how our lovable insect heroes keep defeating their predators. Go insects!

  3. Yeah, I haven't heard of Turkey being very widely known in Japan either. Funny story though: a friend of mine from Japan who went to school in the US a few years back thought Moose were pretty unusual and exotic.

Now, I do think Moose have a slightly wider range (even into upper China) and are probably more well-known, but with that in mind I still found it pretty amusing when there was a Moose Orphenoch in the Faiz movie (alongside the Pelican one), so hey, who knows...
