Decade Double First Thoughts

Full review to come. These are the first impressions.

SPOILERS

Decade part: Confusing at first. It ends up getting quite meta. There is some good throwback to episode 1, but much is left mysterious. Ultimately the message is that Decade is whatever the story wants him to be, as he 'has no story'.

Tackle rules, but is very underused. Her big secret is that she's become a sort of spiritual guide, ala Virgil. So technically, she ain't dead by the end. Kivaraa survives too. How about that?

Continuity is all over the map. Best to just assume we'll never know all the answers, because the movie is more interested in the what than the why.

Double part: Surprisingly good. When W gets serious, it really roars. Shotaro is a masterclass as usual. Philip chews scenary like it was gum. Akiko is at her best due to the weight of the situation, and wears a reeeeeally short skirt.

Skull is great, though we only see the real one briefly. Most of the time he's a Dopant shapeshifter. He has some nice foreshadowing in Decade part.

The begins night stuff is good, though mostly opens up more questions. There's good twists in the plot, and builds nicely. It even makes me like the Futo Irregulars.

Crossover part: Mindless fun. Big mess 'o cgi with the Heisei Riders all FFRiding. Neo Organism kid is annoying as hell, and Doras nor Ultimate D ain't got nothing on Granbazaami, but hey. It's a blast.

Over all: All Riders istill the best Rider movie of the year, while this is good if jumbled fun. I liked the Decade part, but it didn't really do much to explain itself, looking ahead rather than back, and if anything Decade needs to look back at what it's rooted in.

Double part is very good, though it needs to fit into the series to work because there is a lot of good backstory here and it would be a shame to see it AU'd. But otherwise, it rocks.

All in all, good movie, but likely not to please if you want all the answers to either show. Still, plenty of fun.

And Zol is greeeeeat.

  1. Decade. . . No Story! Ha, can't really say I'm surprised by this. Though I can already smell the fire from the riots about to start.

Good to hear that Double's part was good though. I've been liking Double a lot, thanks to some solid writing and Shotaro. I wonder how long the liking the Irregular thing will last. . . . Probably tomorrow!

  2. The Double part is to be expected. Considering how nobody except the executives in Museum seem to have all the answers, I doubted that Begins Night would have given us any significant info from the start. Maybe a few tidbits here and there, but nothing that really matters.

  4. Just came back from Toei theater. The Decade movie TOTALLY didn't explain anything...

...I loved it. It made up for it's flaws with tons of action. There's a Rider Kick like...every 10 minutes.

And the big finale? Forget about it. Good stuff.

If you want plot, sit this one out. But if ya wanna see lotsa rider action, this is the one to see.

Tried out my Triple Extreme Attack Ride card after the show too.
