Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

(I know he's really a Frog. Silence!)

So apparently it's now possible to stream Japanese TV (including Kiva!) live, with this "Keyhole TV" thingy. Don't ask me how it works, don't ask me about it, don't ask me to help you with it, because I don't use it. I'm just putting it out there for anyone interested. You should be able to find what you need in this thread at Henshin Justice Unlimited.

Not much to say this week other than a fantastic episode, and Nago is a Grade-A Bastard!

CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG!?

Kamen Rider Kiva Episode 10: "Sword Dance: A Melody of Glass"

Nago henshins into IXA. Kivat-Bat starts talking about violins again. I'm sorta waiting for the episode where he gets cut off mid-sentence by flying into something while he blabs away and knocks himself out.

IXA Blast Mode sends the Frog Fangire flying with a flying kick. Like you do. He then pulls out the IXA Calibur and starts blasting away. But Wataru gets in the line of fire, and tells Froggy to run. He books it.

IXA de-transforms, and Nago is furious at Wataru, who apologizes profusely.

"I don't want to see your face anymore!" shouts Nago as he leaves.

1986. Yuri is yelling at Otoya again at the cafe as Otoya eats Omlette-Rice. Otoya has told Yuri, Shma & co. about Jirô's little secret, but naturally nobody believes him and thinks he's just out to start something. Jirô shows up and Otoya Fans, you're not going to want to miss the moment where he gets ketchup squirted all over his face. It's iconic.

2008. Omura is back helping Wataru on the violin project. Wataru talks about how he knows Omura is a Fangire now. Omura talks about the past, and how he has held a promise for 22 years to not attack (well, kill) humans. He talks of the Black Star, which he once owned...

1986. "Return my violin!" he says to Yuri, changing into Frog Fangire. Yuri is prepared to fight, but Otoya shows up. Frog throws Otoya at Yuri. Yuri gets up and slashes at Frog with her weapon. Jirô shows up, and Frog runs for it. Jirô picks up the violin case, which is full of wind-up toys. Otoya has the real Black Star! Omura follows him.

Jirô confronts Otoya about this soonafter.

"Why does Fangire fight Fangire?" Otoya asks.

"I am not a Fangire!" Jirô responds.

Jirô will not let him pass by. Otoya grabs Jirô's weapon and holds it to his neck, but soon returns it and leaves. He has no interest in this petty squabble. Omura sees all of this.

2008. Wataru & Omura still cutting out that violin.

1986. Otoya brings the Black Star back home. Omura has followed him, a fact Otoya reveals he is well aware of. Omura wants to know what Otoya's up to. As it turns out, Omura made the Black Star violin. And he knows a good violinist when he hears one. And the people who had it in the past? Not good enough, apparently. Otoya is ready to smash it, but he stops.

"You can't do it?"

Otoya puts the Black Star aside and takes out his own. It's damaged though.
Omura offers to fix his violin, for a price...

2008. Wataru still working away. Omura talks of how he changed bacuse of that man...

1986. Omura has repaired Otoya's violin. He tests it out. The sound of Otoya's playing awakens something in the other man.

2008. Omura remembers how he changed when he heard Otoya's playing. He plays a recording for Wataru on his mp3 player. Wataru is impressed.

1986. Omura admits he has found someone worthy of possessing the Black Star. Omura begs Otoya to not let his skills go to waste. He wants to know his secret, he wants to see his skills flourish, and see the rist of a great violinist. In exchange, he will make a pact with Otoya, not to harm humans any more...

Yuri & Jirô confront Omura at night. He tries to evade them, but Jirô roughs him up. Cornered, he can't get away. Otoya tells them to stop, and attacks them with a fire extinguisher. Omura & Otoya flee.

The next day, Omura dumps the Black Star into a lake. He promises to start again...

"I've been reborn...Kurenai Otoya...from now on I will live in your music..."

2008. Nago has a meeting with Wataru at that outdoor cafe they always seem to hit up. Wataru asks him about the Fangire. They debate about whether the Fangire are all enemies of humans. Wataru believes that there are Fangire who are not evil, and don't really want to hurt anyone. Guess what Nago thinks?

"Evil is evil!" Nago thinks Wataru is a fool and that he doesn't know anything. He then storms off.

Omura is being driven mad by the sound of construction work. He yells for them to stop, but no one hears him. He has dropped his MP3 player. Nago appears and crushes it. He taunts Omura, who begins to change.

Bloody Rose begins playing. But Wataru ignores it... Kivat-Bat asks what he's doing. He relents...

Frog Fangire is beating up construction workers left and right. Wataru shows up, begging for him to stop.

"Stop him!" Kivat-Bat commands him.

"Henshin!"

Kiva (Kiva Form) tries to stop Frog Fangire. He talks about the promise. He talks about all the good things Omura and him can make together. But Omura is beyond help. Kiva is thrown back. Kivat-Bat gos to attack himself.

Kiva is weakened, trying to stand. Tons of people are getingt punched and kicked left and right. Kiva, unable to take any more, throws a Fuestle to Kivat's mouth, and initiates the Darkness Moon Break.

But he stops just short, and doesn't hit Frog Fangire...

Night reverts to day, and suddenly they're outside (!) Frog Fangire runs off. Kiva can't bring himself to kill him.

Omura goes to the lake where 22 years ago he threw the Black Star away. Nago is waiting.

Frog changes.

Nago transforms.

"Henshin!"

IXA Save Moder and Frog Fangire fight.

"Fangire...Give that life back to God!" IXA says. He changes to Burst Mode and pulls out Calibur, changing it to its sword mode, and starts beating on Frog.

IXA eventually uses one of his own Fuestles, and destroys Frog with a blinding slash. This is a really odd looking effect; for some reason a big ball of fire appears behing IXA when he does this. I don't really get it, but it looks cool! Frog collapses as IXA walks away.

Omura, near death, stumbles away. Wataru runs up to his side.

"You can do it. Believe in your own power." Omura tells the younger man. Omura stumbles into the lake, becomes Frog Fangire, and explodes.

The Black Star still lies at the lake bottom, and the glass-like fragments of the Frog Fangire fall around it...

Next Time: Kiva vs. IXA!

  1. Mr Igadevil, it's all awesome about kamen rider kiva, but can't you come with some more review of the figurines? I mean recently there's only been Kiva and Kiva...

  2. I've had *very* little time lately, because I work full time and have a lot of other commitments, so I've been unable to really get much done online. I hope to get back on track in April, when I'll have a bit more free time.

Please keep all further comments like this to e-mail; I allow comments on this blog to talk about the subjects at hand. Everything else should be e-mail, thanks.

  3. The "ball of fire" is supposed to be the sun, methinks. Just like how Kiva's motif is the moon/darkness. I'm interested to see how the rider systems are related, storywise. We haven't had a very good story explanation for any rider systems since Blade.

  4. What? Kabuto wasn't good enough. All we needed to know was that the Masked Rider system was made in the 70s and took 30 years for it to be perfected.

Great summary, Igadevil! Kinda surprised that the frog wants to play good, unless he wants to be on the show a little while longer.

  5. Iga-san, I am being amazed by these reviews. I was just thinking why Wataru seems to be playing Takumi (having doubts about killing the Kaijin since there are good ones among them) early on.

Omura would have made a good mentor figure to Kiva, a Tachibana-sensei of sorts, if only the writers thought of doing so (dang it, I just adore President Murakami especially if he's playing nice-guy roles). But then again, maybe that's Shizuka's purpose: a Tachibana and Mana-chan rolled into one perhaps?

I'm now waiting for the obligatory Rider-on-Rider violence. This must be explosive...

  6. And to add to Kurotatsu, Nago must be playing a Kaixa (of the Kusaka variety). Man, are there going to be Faiz references now? They've had it with the forms looking a lot like Kuuga... after all, Murakami has appeared. Who's next, Mr. J? The lovely Saeko Kageyama would be very welcome...
